The port of Trieste is arguably the least Italian of all Italian cities, having come to be a part of Italy as a result of the vagaries of war. From the late 14th until the early 20th centuries, Trieste was the port for the Austrians and was dominated politically by Austrians. It did not become a permanent part of modern Italy until 1954. The most famous attraction in the city is the stunning and huge Piazza Unita d'Italia which opens to the sea on one side and is surrounded by majestic buildings of the Austrian era. Trieste was also an important port during the Roman Empire and several Roman remnants remain including several temples on San Giusto Hill, an arch from about 30 BCE and a Roman theater. On the hill are the San Giusto Cathedral and the San Giusto Castle. The city is filled with historic coffee houses celebrating the city's central place in the importation of the noble bean. South of the old city is Risiera di San Sabba, the site of Nazi attrocities. North along the coast are two stunning seaside castles, Miramare from the 19th century and Duino, originally built in the late 14th century. The ancient Roman city of Aquileie is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which also includes a pristine example of an early Christian basilica. The area surrounding Trieste also has many natural wonders of Karst terrain. Grotta Gigante is said to be the world's largest public cave and it could enclose St. Peters Basilica in its largest chamber. Just across the border in Slovenia are the UNESCO World Heritage site, Skocjan Caves park and the most popular cave in Europe, Postojna. At the very norhern end of the Adriatic in Monfalcone is the headquarters of Fincantieri, the company that has built many of the world's cruise ships.

Geography and Population

Trieste sits at the northeast corner of the Adriatic sea just above the Istrian peninsula which Italy shares with Slovenia and Croatia. The region's unique geography results from the Karst geology of the land. The city is home to just over 200,000 locals most of whom are Italian, but with sizable Serbian, Slovene and Croatian minorities.
