Venice Venice is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world due to its incredible architectural beauty and its geographical singularity. Built on islands in the Venetian Lagoon, it is intersected by canals, large and small that provide the primary transportation around the city. The other option is walking, since the canals are crossed by many bridges, like the Rialto Bridge (right) over the Grand Canal. The most romantic way to tour the city is on the traditional gondola. The most famous attractions in the city are on St. Mark's Square, including St. Mark's Basilica, the famous obelisk, and the Ducal (sometimes called Doges) Palace. The New York Times has called Venice the world's most beautiful city and many agree. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Venice is unique because of its location deep in the Adriatic and close to Central Europe. During the Medieval and Renaissance eras, it served as an essential cultural and trading connection with the Orient, particularly the Islamic world. The influence of Islamic art is obvious in local buildings and the city has its own style of building that blends east and west. As a center of commerce, the city has had many wealthy arts patrons who encouraged visual and performance arts. The Venice Opera house, La Fenice, is a work of splendor. The city has spread to several smaller islands in the lagoon (including Murano) and to the mainland, but nearly all the attractions are on the original archipelago.

How Far?

Transportation - Getting to Venice from the mainland is best by bus, train or boat. Busses cost 2,50 to 3 Euros. There is a train station at the airport that offers direct transportation to the city. Boats of two types are also available at the airport: Water Taxis (think Water Limos) and Vaporetto (Water Buses). Getting around Venice and the surrounding islands is best done by Vaporetto or Water Taxi. The world famous gondolas are expensive and are not a point-to-point mode of transportation. The Vaporetto follow set routes and are crowded. The Water Taxis are point-to-point, but pretty pricey. Water taxis from the airport can cost 100 Euros and the Vaporetto between the Airport and the Cruise Port is only 20 Euros when last checked (VeniceLink.com). Full day passes for the Vaporetto are available.

Getting around Venice - Venice is not a single island, but actually a archipelago closely knit by bridges, but not by roads. So boats and walking or a combination of the two is the best way to get around. There are many bridges, but in some places a traghetti (similar to a gondola but more basic) is used to make the crossing. These short trips typically cost 1-2 Euros. Water taxis are a more luxurious and expensive way to get from point to point.

Gondola Ride - Gondola rides are set so it is important to know the current rates to ensure that you pay appropriately. Also the price is not affected by the location of the ride, so be sure to pick a scenic route. From 7pm until 8am a 40 minute ride is priced at 100 Euros (per boat, not per person). Up to 6 people can ride at this rate. Additional time can be added in 20 minute increments at 50 Euros per period. Between 8am and 7pm the price is 80 Euros, with 40 Euros per additional 20 minutes.
