Vigo (pronounced BEE-go or BEE-ho locally) is the largest city in Galicia, the ancient Celtic region of Atlantic Spain. Though not a major international tourist destination, it is very appealing because the area is much greener and temperate than much of Spain and because the city has an inviting and casual atmosphere. The port is on the south side of the Vigo River Estuary, protected by the Cies Islands, a National Park. The city itself has a scenic old town, a Celtic fortress commonly known as El Castro on top of a central hill, and lovely beaches to the west and south of the Cruise Terminal. There is some great shopping in the old town area. One of the most popular attractions is the Cies Islands National Park, but access is limited, so it is essential that you book tours or ferry tickets early. Nearby attractions include the Galician town of Tui on the border with Portugal and the neighboring Portuguese town of Valenca. North of the city is the port city of Pontevedra, called the most Galician of all cities. Only an hour away is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santiago de Compostela which has been a pilgrimage site since the early Middle Ages.
