Valletta, Malta Cuisine | Where to Eat

Popular Local Cuisine: Maltese food is strongly influenced by Italian specialties, but can be hard to find because of the proliferation of British tourists who often want a taste of home. Traditional food was based on locally-caught fish, vegetables and, for special occasions, rabbit (called fenek). A popular snack is pastizz, a flakey pastry filled with ricotta cheese (or sometimes with what the English call mushy peas). Be on the lookout for restaurants specializing in fenkata, fried or stewed rabbit often preceded by spaghetti with rabbit sauce. Maltese sausage is very popular and used in a variety of dishes. Unleavened ftira bread is enhanced with oils and spicy sauces.

Kinnie is a popular local soft drink made with bitter orange. Some decent table wines and internationally awarded vintage wines are produced in Malta and if you are interested, you can visit the vineyards.
