Varna is a vibrant and historic port on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria that offers a lovely urban setting with many beaches and parks, along with ancient historic ruins and a lively social atmosphere. Well-known for its Copper Age artifacts and golden jewelry, the Bronze Age Thracians were the dominant culture about 3000 years ago. Odessos was the name give to the city by Greeks of the Mycenean era.  It was later ruled by the Romans. The Archaeological Museum offers artifacts from many different eras in the city's history and many are locally produced golden crafts. The massive Roman Baths and the Cathedral of Mary's Assumption (also called Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral) are two of the city's most popular historic sites. Within walking distance of the Cruise Terminal is the Sea Garden Park, which offers gardens, a zoo, an aquarium, a dolphinarium and several other attractions that will appeal to cruisers of all ages. On the sea side of the part a popular beaches famous for the thermal fountains. North of the city are the Euxinograd Summer Palace, the Aladzha Cave Monastery, Golden Sands resort area and the Balchik Botanical Gardens and Palace. West of the city is the UNESCO World Heritage, Madara Horsemen.  And south of the city is the beach resort region known as Sunny Beach and the UNESCO World Heritage Nesebur site.

Geography and Population

Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria with a metropolitan population of almost one half million. The port is located inside a large bay and along two canals which are connect to the large Varna Lake.  The region is blessed with a series of sandy beaches which have made it a popular vacation destination.
