Yalta is a small resort city on the southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine and on the Black Sea. It has a long history as a Winter playground for the rich and famous due to the lovely scenery and the local spas. Besides Czar Nicholas II, the last czar of Russia, the other most famous resident was arguably Chekhov, whose house is now a museum in his honor. The Yalta conference where Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin met for the first and last time was held at Alexander's Palace at Livadia. The region is known for its dessert wines and for the healing waters. The waterfront is covered with resorts, some of which still offer traditional spa services. The beautiful Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the first thing you notice when you ship approaches the port. The Alupka Palace, built by Count Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov in the early 19th century, offers a look into the lives of the Russian nobility. One of the most often photographed buildings in the Black Sea is the Swallow's Nest Palace, a small medieval fantasy built by a Russian general in 1895 and rebuilt in 1911 by a German oil magnate.
