Zadar is the most important Croatian port in northern Dalmatia and has a long and colorful history. Elements of that history are viewable in the small walkable old town which is contained on a small peninsula. To go back to prehistoric times you will need to visit the Archaeological Museum, but elements of the Roman city remain. This is especially true of the Roman forum which is near several other important historic monuments, including the pre-Romanesque St. Donatus Church, the Romanesque Cathedral and St. Mary's Church. Much of the city walls have been destroyed but several important gates remain. A recent fascinating addition to the city is the sea organ, built into the promenade near where cruise ships dock. The natural movements of the water set off musical sounds created with tubes. Besides the wonderful city itself, there are some fascinating day tours to suit nearly every taste. Two of Europe’s finest National Parks can be visited on day trips to Plitvice and Krka, featuring colorful waterfalls, lakes, which result from the famous karst landscape. The small city of Nin is an old capital tucked in a protected bay. Sibenik is a UNESCO World Heritage site named for its historic authenticity and beauty. The rugged coast line has produced an area that offers beaches, and recreation areas of stunning beauty.

Geography and Population

Zadar is located on the mainland of northern Dalmatia, in the middle and southern coastal region of Croatia. The area is known for its karst formations, which are dolomite or limestone bedrocks that are dissolving through the action of water over time. The result of this action are caves, dramatic waterfalls and colorful lakes resulting from the solution of the water being mixed with the soluble rock. It's also known for its rocky islands that guard the mainland coast. Zadar is Croatia's fifth largest city with a population of just over 75,000.
