Zakynthos Island was nearly destroyed by a series of earthquakes in 1953 which leveled all but three historic buildings on the island. Some historic sites have been reconstructed, but to this day, the island is more appealing for its natural setting and dramatic vistas than for any historic sites. Within the capital, Zakynthos Town, the most important sites and two that survived the earthquake are on Solomos Square, named for the poet and writer of the Greek national anthem, Dionysios Solomos. Also on the square is St. Nicolas Church and the Byzantine Museum, which houses many artifacts from sites that were destroyed in the earthquake. Towering above the city are the remains of the small Venetian Fortress which represents the power that ruled the island the longest. Bochali, the small town adjacent to the fortress, offers amazing views of the port city. The villages of Volimes and Anafonitra offer visitor rustic charm and a 14th century monastery. Nearby is the island’s most photographed spot, which is now known as Shipwreck Beach (Navagio). The island is shaped like an arrow head and at the northern tip is Skinari Cape, with its white-bleached cliffs and famous "Blue Caves" that are accessed from the sea. The turquoise waters give the caves a blue interior glow. More stunning caves are found in the southwest of the island at Kampi. There are many excellent beaches relatively close to Zakynthos Town and several are protected because they are nesting grounds for the endangered Careta-Careta turtles.

Geography and Population

The island of Zakynthos has only recently regained the population it had in 1900 due to the exodus brought on by the earthquake. The entire island has a population of just over 40,000 people of which nearly half live in and around the capital. The rocky island is just south of Kefalonia and west of Peloponnesus, is 40 kilometers north to south, and roughly 20 kilometers west to east.
